It’s simple, really

We just hit I-10 west headed back to Cajun country. As much as the salty air overfills my cup, home is where my heart lies.

On the last morning, while sipping a piping hot cup of coffee and wrangling our 16 month old, we were feeling overwhelmed. I am sure it’s a universal feeling for those in this same stage. That 12-24 month stage where they do not have a sense of danger. The word ‘no’ is just a formality because he’s still going to put it in his mouth or jump off of it. It’s the stage that requires 100% of your undivided attention. It’s beautiful, don’t get me wrong. Drunk baby walks and chubby legs. But there is zero chill for them or you. Someone is always on duty and that leaves little time for meaningful connection with anyone.

But, in the midst of feeling overwhelmed, we tend to always seek to find gratitude for our lives. The beach is our favorite place. We look forward to the sound of the waves, sandcastles, and beach snacks, but it looks different at this stage. We went in with tempered expectations. We probably weren’t going to sit on a beach with the boys. We made the most of just having a different rhythm and spending time with family.

Sometimes it’s that simple. Just being somewhere different with family. Watching the boys sneak apple cake and Oreos from their grandparents was probably my personal highlight. Watching their trust, affection, and love deepen with their grandparents.

It’s simple, really.

I didn’t have time to even finish my coffee that morning before it was cold. A little dude made a b line for the pool. We looked at each other with a knowing, it’s time to get home to safety locks. But, Clint and I had just enough time to look at each other and say:

“How beautiful is it that we have built a life that we don’t need to run away from.”

And, isn’t that the goal?

A life that makes YOU happy. A life that gives you meaning and purpose. A life that fills your cup in all the ways that you need.

It doesn’t need to be big and fast.

It doesn’t need to be full of overindulgence.

It just has to be a place where you feel comfortable with those you love with a rhythm that matches your soul.

Create a life so beautiful that when you leave it, you can’t wait to get back to it.

XO,

Des
